Our Community Service Programs

Every month our club’s general meeting is hosted by one of our Community Service Programs. These are committees within our club and these committees will plan a project, speaker or activity for our members. A sampling of each program is below.

Arts & Culture: Chair Sara tyree

Arts & Culture: Chair Annie brewer

The FVJWC promotes and supports art activities in our club, schools, and community by:

  • Co-Hosting and participating in GFWC Arts Festivals at the local, district, and State level

  • Donating to local art classrooms

  • Volunteers for Kids NPraise at Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church where we lead children in learning songs for worship and a large musical production twice per year.

  • Attending and promoting the Follow Me 2 Fuquay Music Series

  • Supporting the performing arts: NC Symphony, DPAC, Duke Performing Arts Center, and local schools

  • Supporting events at NC Museum of Art

We strive to increase awareness of conservation issues, work to preserve, maintain and restore our natural resources, preserve habitats for plants and animals, and participate in endeavors to beautify and sustain the world around us.  Some of our local projects include:

  • Sponsoring recycling drives

  • Participating in our local '“Clean the Quay” day.

  • Supporting our state Zoo, Aquariums, and Science Museums

  • Recycling grocery bags and making them into mats for the homeless

 

Education & Libraries: Chair lindsey williams

We strive to help improve the quality of life and create a better world through education.  Some of our local projects include: 

  • Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship: Each year, we award a $1,500 Scholarship to a high school student who will be attending a four-year college in North Carolina. We work together with the Fuquay-Varina Women’s Club to judge applicants from local high schools. Each club's winner goes on to the District Competition.  The State winner of this scholarship is awarded $3,000/yr for four years.

  • Sunshine Bin Project: Donates snacks for children at local elementary schools. This project is funded by the Grant for Good grant from Invest in Others.

  • Promote Box Tops for Education

  • Regularly donate technology needs to local schools

  • Volunteers in School

  • Regularly donate to the Fuquay-Varina Community Library

 

Health & Wellness: Chair florence matthews

We raise awareness and help address issues that affect the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.  Some of our local projects and organizations we support have been:

  • We organized and sponsored local teenage girls to attend a TeenPower Workshop that we held at The Fuquay-Varina Community Center. For more information on KidPower click here.

  • Installed a Baby Blessings Box on North Ennis Street in Fuquay-Varina where the community can “Take what they need and give what they can”

  • Regularly donate car seats to our local fire department and police department

  • Clothing drive for Dress for Success

  • Regularly donate to SPCA of Wake County and Harnett County Animal Services

  • Regularly donate to Hand of Hope

  • Christmas caroling at local rest homes

  • Regularly donate to the Fuquay-Varina Food Pantry

  • Support local youth sports teams through an equipment drive in partnership with The Town of Fuquay-Varina and Play It Again Sports

 

Civic Engagement & Outreach: Chair Kim Hatch

We strive to become better world citizens through advocacy, education, and action.  Some of our projects include:

  • Support Military Missions in Action

  • Donated McGruff Costume to Police department

  • Education and Participation in Elections

  • Volunteered at Freedom Hot Air Balloon Festival

  • We have been selected by the Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce as the Run the Quay Charity Partner for two years in a row (2019 and 2020). Funds that we have received have gone to FVPD’s Teen Day, Fuquay-Varina Town Sports Scholarships and holding a women’s self defense course.

  • Donated to Transformation Textile

  • Shoeboxes for Operations Christmas Child

  • Sponsor a child through Plan International USA

  • Sponsor a child though Children with Disabilities Fund International

  • Operation Smile

 

Domestic Violence & Advocates for children: Chair Heather Massengill

We work to create awareness to help prevent domestic violence.  Domestic Violence includes Teen Dating Violence, Elder Abuse, and Child Abuse.  Some recent projects our club have done include:

  • Support Interact of Wake County and Pass It On

  • Wear Purple for Domestic Violence Awareness

  • ​Clothing Drive for Dress For Success, Triangle, NC

  • Donated a handicap swing for children to use free of charge at the Fuquay-Varina splash pad

  • Donated a handicap accessible swing at a local park

  • Sponsor the Read and Feed program one night a month for a local school

  • Support the Fuquay-Varina Police Departments Shop with a cop

  • Sponsor and support our local High School Juniorette Club
