Community Service Programs

We focus on six Community Service Programs (CSPs) year-round to guide projects and address the needs in our community. Each month, one committee also plans a project, speaker, or educational activity during our membership meeting.

Arts & Culture

CSP Chair: Courtney Parsons

Arts and culture are essential to making the world a more beautiful, thoughtful, and caring place. FVJWC promotes arts and culture in our community by: co-hosting and participating in GFWC Arts Festivals at the local, district, and state levels; donating to local art classrooms to provide more opportunities for students to explore and create; and supporting our local museums and performances. We also partner annually with the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center to co-host the Gingerbread House Competition!

Project Highlight: We kicked off the Club year with a fun project during our membership meeting! Clubwomen brought new and gently used dance costumes and accessories to donate to Dance Fairies, a nonprofit organization that collects and redistributes dance wear around the world. Dance Fairies was inspired by passion and love for dance and recognition that not all children have access to beautiful dance costumes and proper dance shoes to allow them to follow their dreams. 15 costumes, 4 pairs of shoes, 1 pair of tights, 1 leotard, and 1 pair of leg warmers were collected to inspire passion for dance, express emotions, and develop self-confidence. 

Environment

CSP Chair: Kim Hatch

Being good stewards of the earth is critical to preserving our environment for generations to come. Our club participates in endeavors to beautify and sustain the world around us such as: sponsoring recycling drives; participating in our local “Clean the Quay” day; donating to local animal shelters; and supporting NC’s zoo, aquariums, and science museums.

Project Highlight: We completed the Nextrex Recycling Challenge, a program that provides a Trex bench for recycling 1,000 pounds of plastic. The project allowed us to keep plastic out of a landfill and get our families and neighbors involved, too!

Education & Libraries

CSP Chair: Lindsey Williams

Many of our local projects are designed to support schools and teachers, promote libraries and literacy, and create a better world through education. Some of these initiatives include: partnering with our local library throughout the year; volunteering at elementary, middle, and high schools; and donating books to schools and organizations in need.

Have you checked out the StoryWalk at Alston Ridge Park? This special project is part of our ongoing partnership with the Town of Fuquay-Varina and the Fuquay-Varina Community Library to provide literacy opportunities to children, promote family time, and enjoy nature. Clubwomen clean the storyboards on a monthly basis and books are changed out seasonally. 

We also provide teacher grants to educators who are new to the field or subject area and a $1,500 scholarship to a high school student each year.

Project Highlight: The Sunshine Project is our Club’s biggest initiative. Snacks and shelf-stable meals are provided to 20 local schools each month. These donations help to feed students ages 5-18 who face food insecurity at home. Read more about this program and how you can help here!

Health & Wellness

CSP Chair: Marilyn Spencer

Raising awareness and addressing issues that affect the well-being of individuals, families, and communities is one of our top priorities. Our projects promoting health and wellness have included: donating to the Fuquay-Varina Food Pantry and Operation Nahyelle; hosting self-defense and TeenPower workshops; caroling at a local rest home; and supporting youth sports through an equipment drive and parks & rec scholarships.

Project Highlight: During our November meeting, Jessica Throneburg, FVJWC Clubwoman and former recipient of Ronald McDonald House services, spoke about how RMH supports families whose children are receiving care in a nearby hospital. Families receive a safe place to stay within close proximity to their children, dinners, snacks, activities, play spaces for children, and so much more. Members purchased items to fill 40 totes with care package items including toiletries, activity items, self-care items, notebooks, and even wrote individual notecards of encouragement for families.

Civic Engagement & Outreach

CSP Chair: Breanne Cruikshank

Members of our club strive to become better world citizens through advocacy, education, and action. These efforts include: supporting Military Missions in Action’s fundraisers and programs; participating in elections and encouraging others to do so as well; packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child; Sponsoring a child through Plan International USA and through Children with Disabilities Fund International; volunteering at town events; and providing a McGruff costume to our local police department.

Project Highlight: We have been hosting blood drives with the American Red Cross since 2019. As of December 2025, we have collected 1,658 units of blood since our first drive. This is a great way to help saves lives while also connecting with our community!

Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention
and Advocates for Children

CSP Chair: Sydney Guthrie

The goal of this CSP is to raise awareness of domestic & sexual violence and to advocate for victims and survivors of teen dating violence, elder abuse, and child abuse. These projects include: supporting Interact of Wake County and volunteering monthly at Pass It On Thrift Store; wearing purple for domestic violence awareness; donating a handicap swing for children to use free of charge at the Fuquay-Varina splash pad; sponsoring and serving dinner at Expand, a local literacy program; annually donating car seats to our local fire department and police department; and sponsoring and supporting our local high school’s Juniorette Club.

Project Highlight: Our Baby Blessings Box is restocked regularly with diapers, baby food, formula, blankets, and more. Our community is invited to, “Take what you need. Give what you can.” Throughout the year, Clubwomen also make in-kind contributions to ensure families in our community have the supplies they need.
